What the research says.

Peer-reviewed studies on how children calm, settle, and regulate. Each one links to its record on PubMed, the National Library of Medicine database at NIH. We show what each study found, and what it does not show.

Most of these studies were done by independent researchers and are indexed by NIH, not run by NIH. We mark NIH funding where the record shows it.

How to use this page

This is a reading list, not a treatment guide. Studies describe groups of children, not any one child. Some tested clinical programs or biofeedback equipment that are different from our cards, and each entry says so. Our materials teach skills and are not medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Talk with your child's doctor about any health concern.

How to read the labels

Early evidenceResults lean helpful, but studies are small, short, or limited in other ways.
Mixed or limitedResults are inconsistent, small, or did not beat the comparison group.
Background researchDescribes how children or families are affected. It does not test a calming tool.
